Replacing a Laptop Hard Drive

by Loyd Case, PC Magazine, August, 2007

Q: I have a laptop computer (IBM ThinkPad with a Centrino 1.6-GHz processor and a 60GB hard drive, 5,400 rpm). I'm looking to replace the 60GB drive with a new one, and I do want to make a drive image. I have successfully imaged desktop hard drives several times using DriveImage software, but a problem arises with laptops.

In desktop computers you have two or more IDE or SATA connections, and it is easy to copy the data from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. But my laptop appears to have just one socket, for one hard drive attachment. Any ideas on how I can connect two IDE drives and have the laptop recognize them? — Costas Georgas

A: One thing you can do is to buy a compact USB case designed for 2.5-inch laptop hard drives.

If you go this route, you'll simply install the new hard drive into the USB hard drive case, then boot from your DriveImage CD. From there you'll perform the familiar task of copying the image from the internal drive to the new USB drive. (This is assuming that your version of DriveImage recognizes external USB disks; if not, you may have to upgrade.)

Once that's done, swap the internal drive for the one in the USB case. You'll be able to boot from your new drive, and as a bonus, you'll now have a small external hard drive for backup.

Apricorn ( www.apricorn.com ) offers several kits in its EZ Upgrade series to facilitate this process. We've successfully upgraded several laptops using an EZ Upgrade kit.

Backup Data On Your Laptop

by: John Ugoshowa

If you were to look at past statistics regarding the information that has been lost in regards to laptop computers, you would find yourself amazed. Even though this information can be astounding, many of us still don’t take the time to back up the information on our laptops.

To put it in simple terms, nothing in the computer industry is fool proof. Hard drives can crash, the laptop can get stolen, or it can even be dropped and rendered useless. To ensure that we are never left without our precious data, we should always create a backup of our information.

There is no mistaken the fact that over a million laptops have been stolen over the years in the United States alone. Anytime a laptop is stolen, chances are that it won’t be recovered. If the information wasn’t backed up, then the owner will be left with no laptop - but more importantly - no backed up data either.

Just like you can with desktop computers, you can also create a backup of the data on your laptop as well. You can use online services, back it up remotely, or use several other methods to ensure that you keep all of your data. Preserving your data is something you should really look into, especially if you have business material on your laptop.

The best way to go about backing up your data and files is to burn them to a data CD. Data CDs can hold up to 700 MB (Mega Bytes) of data, which means a lot of files. To back things up this way, all you need is a CD/RW burner in your laptop, which most of the newer ones come with.

The only drawback to laptops is the fact that they don’t offer near as much storage or security measures as a desktop PC. Desktop computers have a lot more power, and they can also do things (including backups) in a fraction of the time.

The laptop computer was designed for on the go use, which is the main reason why people don’t really think about backing up their data. When the thought finally does come to mind, it is normally too late to do anything about it.

As mentioned above, the easiest and quickest way to backup your laptop data is to use an online backup service. Depending on your connection to the Internet, it can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours. Although it may take you a little bit of time, you’ll have the satisfaction in knowing that your data is there if something should happen.

Whether it’s for your business or personal use, you can’t go wrong backing up your data. You should always create a backup of your data at least once a month, even more than that if you have a lot of important information that you add to your laptop on a frequent basis.

Notebook PC Warranties: Study Them Carefully

By Joshua Feinberg

Over the past five years, the price points on notebook PCs have been driven down dramatically. However, lower purchase prices not withstanding, notebook PCs still have a rather unique warranty service dilemma.

If a keyboard, mouse-equivalent (tracking-stick or touch-pad) or display fails on a notebook PC, you won’t find inexpensive, third party replacements parts readily available at local retail stores.

Study the Warranties

So as your clients’ virtual CIO who decides on what particular brands and models of notebook PCs to recommend, it’s important to scrutinize notebook PC warranties. With notebooks, individual hardware components are much more specialized than components used for desktop PCs.

For example, notebook hard drives are not as generic as desktop PC hard drives (although notebook PC hard drives are getting more standardized).

Parts Not so Common

As your client’s virtual CIO, you would have great difficulty trying to find a replacement notebook PC hard drive locally at a warehouse club or office supply superstore.

And even if you or your clients miraculously could find one, the price likely would be at least double the cost of a comparable desktop PC hard drive. As a result, the value of hardware component warranty coverage on a notebook PC is substantially greater.

The Bottom Line about the Notebook PC

Unlike desktop PC hard drive replacements, notebook hard drive replacements can be expensive, both from a soft cost perspective as well as the cost of the actual replacement part. Moreover, because notebooks require specific parts, it’s pretty difficult to quickly obtain appropriate replacement parts on your own.

External Laptop Batteries

By Richard Romando

External laptop batteries provide the user with almost seven hours of uninterrupted power. This is a major breakthrough in this field because laptop users had to depend on normal batteries that only worked for two hours. The most important advantage that an external laptop battery offers is that the user does not have to connect his laptop to a power source every couple of hours in order to recharge the conventional battery. Therefore, an external laptop battery is the best solution.

External laptop batteries are very cheap and can be charged by an external battery charger. A laptop user can make a decision about the chemical that is used for manufacturing these batteries such as Nickel Cadmium or NiCd, Nickel metal hydride or NiMH, Lithium ion or Li-ion batteries.

The price of an external battery may vary from $120 to $200 and these batteries are available on the Internet as well as in the regular market. As computers and other related appliances are becoming cheaper, the prices of laptops are also dropping. This means that more and more people are using laptop and for longer periods. These batteries are ideal for those who want an extended power source for their laptops when they are traveling. An external laptop battery connects to a laptop through an AC adapter plug and usually have two output levels. It consists of an adapter, a chord and thirteen other connectors. Another advantage that these batteries provide is that they are universal in nature. This means that an external power battery that is manufactured by a particular company can be used with a laptop of another make and model.

External laptop batteries are revolutionizing the IT world by providing more mobility and extended power for those who want to use the laptop for more than two hours without worrying about power interruptions.
